Michael Douglas looks dapper as he attends photo call without wife Catherine

Michael Douglas, 78, put on a dapper appearance as he posed for a photocall at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, after first attending the annual event in 1979.

The Hollywood actor will be awarded an honorary Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize, at the opening ceremony to honour his impressive career in the film industry.

Michael, who flew solo at the event without wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, looked dapper in a navy suit, paired with a low-button royal blue shirt as he prepared to receive his honour.

He looked handsome as ever as he pointed and waved to the cameras and onlookers.

The Basic Instinct star combed his silver locks back away from his face while shielding his eyes with a pair of dark sunglasses.

On being given the Palme d’Or honour, Michael said: “It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities and excellence in storytelling.

“From my first time here in 1979 to my most recent premiere for Behind The Candelabra in 2013, the Festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not just in what we see onscreen but in its ability to impact people all around the world.

“After more than 50 years in the business, it’s an honour to return to the Croisette to open the Festival and embrace our shared global language of film.”

The Fatal Attraction star has been married to Wednesday actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, 53, since 2000.

While Michael attended the event alone, he was spotted with wife Catherine last Sunday with their daughter Carys, 20, in Venice.

The family tried to keep a low profile in the airport in casual wear, with the Hollywood stars later on attending a wedding.

Michael posted a loving tribute to his wife of 22 years on Instagram, as he wished her a happy Mother’s Day.

Posting a throwback picture of Catherine with Carys and son Dylan, Michael penned: “Happy happy #mothersday darling, you deserve it! You are the best and we love you so much.”

The Cannes red carpet will spring to life with the premiere of the Louis XV period drama, Jeanne du Barry, with Johnny Depp today.
